Invisalign Q&A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a newer orthodontic treatment that utilizes a series of clear aligners to straighten your teeth.
Instead of the metal wires and brackets of traditional braces, Invisalign’s system uses clear aligners made from thermodynamic plastic to exert a small and constant force on your teeth. Over time, that pressure pushes your teeth into a better position, giving you a straight smile.
One of the biggest benefits of Invisalign is how discreetly it straightens your teeth. The clear plastic is virtually invisible, so nobody will know that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.
What conditions does Invisalign treat?
Dr. Smith uses Invisalign to treat many of the same conditions for which he typically uses braces, including:
- Crooked teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Widely spaced teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Open bite
If you’re unsure if your condition is suitable for treatment with Invisalign, schedule a consultation with Dr. Smith. He’ll be happy to examine your smile and recommend an appropriate course of action.
How do I get started with Invisalign?
If Dr. Smith determines Invisalign is right for you, he starts your orthodontic journey by taking a digital impression of your mouth. Using that impression, he designs your treatment plan and maps the necessary steps your teeth need to take to reach proper alignment.
He sends your treatment plan to an Invisalign lab, which uses it to fabricate your aligners. As soon as the lab finishes making your aligners, you begin wearing them.
How does Invisalign work?
To effectively straighten your smile with Invisalign, all you need to do is wear your aligners for 22 hours a day. The aligners are removable, which means you can take them out whenever you need to throughout the day.
If you’re taking an important photo or giving an important presentation, simply remove your aligners and put them back in afterward.
You also take out your aligners whenever you eat, brush, or floss, which means that you won’t have to change your diet or learn new techniques to keep your teeth clean during your treatment.
